Journalists For Justice (JFJ) is a non-profit organisation working to advance improved African journalistic capacity for social justice causes and accountability through training and effective online platforms, and social media engagement. The organisation’s vision is to lead in transforming how citizens see, understand, and define justice by providing them with reliable and usable information about how global justice systems work in seeking justice for victims of atrocity crimes, and catalysing their agency to demand accountability. A: Journalists/ radio JFJ is inviting journalists and media practitioners to submit story ideas or proposals for reporting on issues surrounding transitional justice and the legacy of human rights violations in The Gambia. The topics will include, but will not be limited to, the following subjects: i. Gaps and opportunities in the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) report and the implementation of the recommendations; ii. Accountability and justice processes, actions, and other measures to address past crimes; iii. Reparations for victims; iv. Amnesty and reconciliation as part of the healing process; v. Sexual and gender-based violence and other forms of abuse against women and other vulnerable victims; vi. Institutional reform; and vii. Social cohesion. B: Cartoonists and Caricaturists JFJ is inviting creative cartoonists and caricaturists to present samples of their original work based on justice narratives in the Gambia. The cartoonists should have the ability to produce sketches on issues of justice in a humorous way. The work should interpret ideas and convey stories that reflect public opinion and provide social commentary. The completed stories and illustrations will be published on JFJ’s websites. The call is open to journalists and media practitioners in The Gambia who present a story idea or a brief summary of not more than 100 words. It will be awarded depending on the uniqueness of the proposed story idea and how it differs from others done before, as well as its significance and potential impact. Cartoonists and caricaturists are invited to submit three samples of their unique and original work on justice and human rights in The Gambia. Each applicant will receive up to 5500 Dalasi to cover travel, communication, research, and meals during data and content collection, and writing of the story/producing the cartoon. Its vision is to lead in transforming how citizens see, understand, and define justice by providing them with reliable and usable information about how global justice systems work in seeking justice for victims of atrocity crimes, and catalysing their agency to demand accountability.   Job Description JFJ is seeking the services of a Senior Reporter in The Gambia to produce news and feature stories, as well as news analysis and commentaries, for its websites, especially The Victims’ Bantaba (https://thevictimsbantaba.org/) and social media platforms for one year. The Senior Reporter will cover events and functions with a special focus on the ongoing transitional justice processes in The Gambia, and which are also of relevance to the organisation’s field of operation. He/she will follow news reports on the local transitional justice processes and international news and developments about The Gambia, and develop well-researched related reports.   Duties and Responsibilities
  • The ideal candidate will be passionate about promoting social justice and human rights, and harnessing the power of modern communications and media to help accomplish these goals. He/she will have excellent journalistic skills, and a good understanding of the concept of specialised writing focusing on human rights, justice, and related topics.
  • The stories will have a special focus on the transitional justice processes currently going on in The Gambia, with emphasis on issues that are important to victims, including human rights, truth, justice, and accountability.
This means that the Senior Reporter will be on the lookout for news and stories on areas that align with JFJ’s interests, which include human rights; justice; accountability; the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission and all issues surrounding its work, report, and recommendations; reparations; and victims. This will require good analytical and research skills.
  • The Senior Reporter will write news and feature stories, as well as news analyses, with emphasis on human rights, justice, accountability, and the transitional justice process.
  • He/she will also produce visuals (photos and short videos of selected events) to help illustrate the stories and also draw readers and viewers to JFJ’s social media platforms.
  Requirements
  • University degree or diploma in English, communications studies, journalism, or a related field, with relevant experience in news and feature reporting and writing.
  • Strong command of the English language.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of the journalistic/publication process and best practices.
  • Ability to multi-task and work well under pressure.
  • Proven writing and research experience, preferably in a similar role.
  • A team player with exceptional communication skills.
  • Attentive to detail.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Capacity to work on multiple writing projects simultaneously.

The Gender Fellow will learn about JFJ’s work and build skills in research; writing news and feature stories, as well as analyses and commentaries; and reporting on events and functions, with emphasis on gender, to help advance the organisation’s goals and aspirations. The ideal candidate will be passionate about promoting gender issues in the context of social justice and human rights, and the power of modern communications and media to help accomplish these goals. The Gender Fellow will have excellent writing and research skills, and have a good understanding of the concepts of transitional and international justice, and gender.   Duties and Responsibilities The job will entail attending events on themes related to gender and justice, including those listed below, and researching and writing reports about the functions. These reports will later be produced into news stories, features, commentaries, and news analyses for publication on JFJ’s websites.
  • Monitoring men’s and women's participation in transitional and international justice processes. This will entail identifying potential and existing barriers to participation, and the approaches used to address them in the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission’s (TRRC) conduct of its hearings and recommendations, especially in light of discrimination against women in public affairs and emerging spaces for women's agency in peace processes.
  • Researching the extent to which a gender-sensitive and inclusive lens is applied in transitional and international criminal justice processes. This will involve close monitoring and reporting of cases and related situations to ensure that due consideration is given to adopting effective measures to elicit and understand male and female victims' varied/distinct experiences of conflict and atrocities, as well as victims' corresponding needs for justice and reparation, as influenced by gender-based norms, beliefs, and practices.
  • Reporting on the broad range of gender-based violations experienced in the context of transitional justice and the TRRC processes. This will entail looking beyond easy-to-define gender crimes such as rape and sexual violence to more insidious violations that include genital mutilation, forced nudity, and forced marriage/sexual slavery. The reporting will also have added focus on violations against other special groups, such as male survivors and members of LGBTIQ communities (if relevant).
  • Consider the extent to which the international criminal justice system has treated gendered causes, patterns, and effects of conflict and violations, including whether specific considerations have been put in the TRRC report and recommendations, or if any non-judicial processes have been made to address gender-based discrimination and resulting violations.
  • Monitoring global and regional news relating to The Gambia in terms of gender and transitional justice.
  • Reporting on conferences, lectures, webinars, and other events hosted (or co-hosted) by JFJ and its partners.
  Requirements
  • University degree in the fields of research, policy, international relations, journalism and communication, gender, law and justice, political science, or any other related and/or appropriate discipline.
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Be in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent) or a postgraduate professional traineeship programme; Have graduated with a university degree.
  • Be prepared to commence the fellowship from July 1, 2022.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills in English.

The Gender Justice Fellow will be based in Banjul, and will collaborate with teams in Nairobi and Banjul to conduct research, write news and feature stories, as well as analyses and commentaries, and report on events and functions, with emphasis on gender, to help advance the organisation’s goals and aspirations We are looking for a graduate of journalism, law, anthropology, political science, or psychology who has excellent oral and written communication skills. The ideal candidate will be an early career journalist, researcher, or graduate who has emotional intelligence and empathy to give life to victims’ voices and programmes in The Gambia. He/she will be passionate about promoting gender issues in the context of social justice and human rights and will use the power of modern communications and media to help accomplish these goals.
